You’re a freak

SpermYes, you – you’re a freak. By any reasonable measure, you shouldn’t exist. Nor should I. Nor should anyone else. But we do.

When you were conceived, you were the product of a unique combination of sperm and egg. If any other sperm had won the race, if any other egg had been released, you wouldn’t have been the same person. Effectively, you – the person reading this now – wouldn’t exist.

A man produces about 400 billion sperm in a lifetime, and a woman 400 eggs. Speaking very roughly, that means you’re a 1 in 160 trillion chance. That’s about as likely as winning the UK’s National Lottery on both of the next two weeks, and barely scratches the surface of the possible genetic combinations that could have formed you.
